"Noken (woven net bag)"
From the Dani tribe of Irian Jaya (West New Guinea),Indonesia.
Sometimes called a "Su-ebe". Made from woven inner tree bark strings, white, yellow and red orchid fibres. Women carry these net bags on their head and hung down their back side to hide their private parts and also believed to keep bad spirits away. Nokens are used every day to carry a baby, piglet, potatoes, vegetables. Sometimes they will carry as many as 3-4 "nokens" on their head and drapped over their shoulders to keep the baby and themselves warm.
