"Ceremonial Asmat Paddle"
From the Asmat tribe of Irian Jaya (West New Guinea),Indonesia.
It is called a "Pu" in the Asmat language. A very long decorated ceremonial paddle
carved from nibung wood or iron wood.
The upper end has nice open work carvings of various headhunting symbols
and decorated with white coix seeds, feathers and cassowary black quills.
The paddle blade is incised with headhunting symbols as well.
Asmat men use these long paddles by standing up in the canoe.
In great condition, well used with a good smooth patina on the shaft.
