"Ceremonial Asmat Paddle"
From the Asmat tribe of Irian Jaya (West New Guinea),Indonesia.
It is called a "Pu" in the Asmat language. A very long decorated ceremonial paddle
made from nibung wood or iron wood.
The upper end has nice open work carvings of various headhunting symbols and decorated
with sago fronds and clusters of white coix seeds.
Well used, in great condition and a very smooth patina on the shaft.
It has a very small crack on the upper part of the blade.
Asmat men use these paddles by standing up in the canoe.
