"Asmat Spear"
KSS 2010 Sp
From the Asmat tribe of Irian Jaya (West New Guinea), Indonesia.
Made from Nibung palm tree wood, decorated with intricately woven inner tree bark fibres, coix seeds, and cockatoo feathers attached with beeswax. A very sharp cassowarry claw attached with beeswax is used for the spear tip. Orange color is from ocher river mud and the carved blade has remnants of white crushed shell in the grooves. A spear like this was used for ceremonies, hunting big game or used in warfare for killing man.
Length:7 feet, 7 inches .
